NELSON UNSTOPPABLE IN ADVANTAGE RV MODIFIED TOUR AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (JUNE 1, 2018) – A great starting spot and plenty of power helped Jeremy Nelson to take the win in the DM Motors, Advantage RV Modified Tour presented by Watertown Ford Chrysler at Granite City Speedway.

Nelson and fellow front row starter Dave Cain started battling immediately after the green flag waved in the 40 lap event. Nelson and Cain broke away from third running Justin A-Strike as the first half of the race ran clean and green. Cain tried to used some lap traffic to take over the lead, but each time Nelson would have just a little more of an edge and would deny Cain a shot at the lead. A series of cautions through the middle stages of the race kept the field relatively close to the Nelson and Cain fight for the lead. On the final restart, with about 13 laps remaining, Nelson continued to show the way as A-Strike tried to wrestle second from Cain. This brief battle allowed Nelson to pull away slightly as Cain would soon resume his spot in second. The final few laps saw Nelson extend his lead to nearly a straightway over Cain, by the time the checkered flag waved. A-Strike would hold off Shane Sabraski to finish third.

“I knew whoever was going to get the lead between me and Dave (Cain), was going to end up winning the race,” said a happy Nelson following the race. “So I made sure I beat him into turn one and got to the bottom and it ended up working for us.”

Nelson, the defending series Champion drew on his experience to secure the win. “I knew I had to just stay on the bottom and I was just worried that all of the sudden the top would come in, because every once in a while that happens. I knew someone was going to try something. So, I just kept waiting and waiting, luckily nothing happened.”

Brandon Mehrwerth claimed his first WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature win of the season. Scott Engholm took the lead from the pole, but it was third starting Mehrwerth who latched on behind and soon was challenging Engholm for the lead. Mehrwerth would take the lead by a wheel on lap five, just prior to David Slovick hitting an infield tire in turn two to bring out the race’s lone caution. On the restart, Mehrwerth had Matt Baker and Bud Martini right behind. Baker tried to make a run, but Mehrwerth held all the cards as he went on to take the win by one car length over Baker.

Anthony Kramer made it a flag to flag run in the Outlaw Mini Mod Feature. Kramer started from the pole and set a quick pace with Tommy Patton not far behind in second. A pair of spins by William Dulmage kept Kramer from running away from Patton. On the last restart, Kramer quickly distanced himself from Patton as he cruised to a comfortable win. Patton would maintain second, while Dane Olson came home in third.

For the second time in as many weeks, Dustin Holtquist was the driver to beat in the WISSOTA Mod 4’s as he took yet another feature win. As the green flag waved, Dean Shaver got sideways on the front stretch with nearly the entire field collecting behind him. Once the cars were pried apart, it was a complete restart to the race with Holtquist showing the way. Bob Holtquist disposed of Dean Larson as he occupied second. A couple of cautions for spins set up a late sprint to the finish. However, Dustin Holtquist wasn’t about to let the race get away from him as he opened things up in the final circuits to rack up the win over his dad, Bob Holtquist.

“It’s been an awesome year so far,” remarked Dustin Holtquist following the race. “The track here at Granite City has been phenomenal. Again tonight it was just smooth top to bottom and a very racy awesome track.”

The next event at Granite City Speedway will be Kids Night, with bike giveaways on Friday June 8th sponsored by Gilleland Chevrolet and Bradshaw and Bryant. Racing is scheduled to start at 7:30pm. For more information and to purchase tickets online, go to www.gcspeedway.com
